Default Special Service Section TF?

I am seeking information on the attached badge as I am not aware of any published sources.

I know the letters stand for Special Service Section but do not know what being a member required and what such volunteers did to qualify for the badge.

I also understood that this was related to the Territorial Force but photos show it worn by the earlier Volunteers as per the attached.

As well as the red blue example shown I have seen gold on blue and buff on khaki versions.

I am planning to use any information in the Military Heraldry Society's journal The Formation Sign and would be happy to acknowledge any contributions. I am looking for an image of the khaki version to use in th article.

Over to the expertise on the Forum

Jon
