WWII SAAF grouping
Hi All
I thought I would share this incredible grouping I just got. All souvenirs to one one man's service, S.F. Mitchell. He was 17 at the start of his training near the end of the war in 1944, turning 18 in Jan 1945. He doesn't seem to have been active service but was deployed to Palestine and Italy but his flying log book seems to only record training flights, though it is a bit ambiguous. There are a few 'Bombing' sorties recorded but I suspect that if they had been operational, the target would have been included? The pack includes medals, badges, rank insignia, a lanyard - something which I have never seen before attributed to a WWII serviceman, dog-tags, red-tabs, log-book, training manual....and a prophylactic kit (unused by the look of it!!!) !!! The flight-sergeant rank brassard is a treasure to me as well as it is the first one I have ever seen. I have only seen the SAAF flight-sgt rank in photos or period drawings of insignia before, so for me it is a rarity! There are also a number of photographs and other small items. Cheers, Alex |
