The griddle is that of St Lawrence and also features in Ampleforth College's OTC badge. An early text had a missing letter which recorded that he was 'roasted' when an extra p would have made 'martyred' - much more plausible.
Examples of this badge have been speculatively touted by a couple of dealers as a rare cadet cap badge. There is no evidence of that fact nor a link between a St Lawrence's school or college and a cadet unit wearing that badge. Alan |

I can't find the last auction that it was in but I think Bosley's sold one a couple of years ago. I would add that their OTC badge consultant is often incorrect in some of their IDs.

I wondered about a possible Channel Islands connection but the parish of St.Lawrence on Jersey has a different griddle/gridiron.

It could well be but the griddle is distinctive to St Lawrence. It may well be a cadet badge but I would have thought a 'St L ' would have been more appropriate and some reference to a cadet or the school or college.
I was unable to find any contender for a St Lawrence's school or College which had a cadet corps but it might be out there. There is the St Lawrence College in Ramsgate but that is an OTC with the intertwined fish? badge. There is no griddle in the school crest either. Last edited by Alan O; 14-08-22 at 03:02 PM. |

I think it might well be related to the Ampleforth College Fire Squad who were uniformed according to this article.
It could well be a fire hat badge for the school. SL = Section leader perhaps. or perhaps it's scout related? The resemblance to Ampleforth's CCF and OTC badges is a strong one but it is not her OTC, JTC or CCF badge. http://www.ampleforthjournal.org/V_109.pdf Last edited by Alan O; 14-08-22 at 03:23 PM. |

Saint Lawrence's in Southend is the church I was christened in and my parents got married in.
St Lawrence's griddle features in the arms of Southend On Sea. He supposedly said that he was quite well cooked on the one side and asked to be turned over.
