Default Metal collar crowns. Rank or not?

Regarding white metal/chrome K/C crowns. How can you tell if they are rank or collar badges? or were they universal? I presume the crown which was used as a cap badge was larger than a collar?

Both white metal and chrome KC's were worn on either the collar or the epaulette by many police forces. The same size (or slightly larger) were often worn as a cap badge by special constables and by regular officers in some small forces where they did not have a custom designed cap badge.

No, crowns used to denote rank had enamelled cushioning to the arches and are quite distinctive.
