Also I have been asked what the purpose of all this is. Well, the object is to take what amounts to a straw poll of badges in this forum audience at manufacturer level. From this pool although unscientific we can see which companies produced the most badges at a unit count and therefore which were the most involved in the creation on anodised aluminium cap badges. The exercise also of course allows us to group unit badges by manufacturer which will be of interest to those who study company history. Another use for this data is to group manufacturer by unit and see which unit badge was made by a particular maker. This allows a collector at a unit level to obtain all those badges made by each company and see what the differences are and how they correspond to the sealed pattern card if available. Therefore, variations from the previously agreed norm can be noted. etc. Regards Chris |

Anodised aluminium cap badges by Firmin
May I suggest that it is dangerous to assume that, simply because a maker's name appears on a badge, button or other accoutrement, that the item was manufactured by that firm. Military procurement is famous for sub-contracting and, quite often, named suppliers had nothing whatever to do with the making of the items in question. Certainly this is more likely with the 'big names' Firmin, Gaunt, British Badge & Button Co., etc. The further back you go, the more you find sub-contracting. Often a microscopic examination of the striking confirms that the same badge was being made by more than one source, despite universal naming.

Not found anything official as such in the anodised aluminium area although I have found the same slider being used by multiple companies who have then applied their different names to the same slider type. Also the same lug type being used by different companies. If you have any documents re: such sub-contracting of A/A badges please let me know. Looking through every official document I currently have or have seen related to A/A cap badges only, does not revel evidence of sub-contracting which of course, does not mean to say the practice ever existed. The period of time I'm looking at is from 1950 to current day. Regards Chris |
