I know nothing about this case, and am prepared to believe that this soldier lost his memory.

However, back in the 1970s I worked with a man who had been a deserter in WW2 and when finally found claimed to have lost his memory, and got away with it.

He was in the Rifle Brigade, but ended up with SAARF. But, of course, not as a member one of those small groups who dropped in to Europe.
