Default Medical Transport: Hospital Ship...

A ward on No 22 Hospital Carrier, formerly the cross channel boat ISLE OF THANET, at Dieppe. A matron with her orderly is going around the patients in their specially fitted cots.

Not particualy a Matron, but more likely a QAINS Nursing Sister (All QAIMNS/QAINS nurses were officers in WWI & II) A Matron on rounds would be accompanied by a sister or Nurse not a medical orderly.

While it may be unlikely that the nursing officer in the photo held the rank of "Matron" (equivalent to Major), it is still possible that she was the senior sister (nurse) afloat and was referred to as "Matron" (in the sense of being the senior nurse in a hospital). Unfortunately, the photo is not clear enough to determine the number of rings the sister has on the cuff of her ward dress (the method used to indicate rank prior to the QAs being officially given equivalent army rank and insignia in 1941). Given that the number of QA nursing sisters (and RAMC other ranks) on a hospital carrier were limited, I don't find it unusual that the "Kardex Queen" (my prejudices are showing) is conferring with one of the more senior RAMC orderlies.

And apparently the senior Sister (whether by rank or custom) was sometimes referred to as Matron.

Grey and Scarlet : letters from the war areas by army sisters on active service has extracts of the writings of a Captain of a Hospital Ship of what he witnessed during the evacuation of Dunkirk. He wrote:

As Captain of this ship I should like to give expression to my admiration and deep regard for the Nursing Sisters aboard. We recently made two trips to Dunkirk and two to Cherbourg, in each case being the last Hospital Carrier to enter and leave the ports. Our second trip to Dunkirk was under extremely severe conditions, bombs and shells dropping all about us and men being wounded and killed alongside our ship on the pier. We had numerous narrow escapes and a nerve racking experience. During all this our Sisters were really splendid. Never a sign of excitement or panic of any kind. They just carried on under the able leadership of our Matron, calmly and efficiently. I feel quite sure that their magnificent behaviour was an important factor in steadying the members of the RAMC personnel with whom they worked.

While this war establishment is dated a few years past the time of the photo, it is probably similar to what would have been on ISLE OF THANET.

A HOSPITAL CARRIER.
War Establishment IV/474/3. May 1943.
This was intended to operate on a hospital carrier ship. In NW Europe these were small Landing Ship Infantry, ex cross Channel ferries. They were not strictly part of 21 Army Group since they were based in the UK but they did operate through Mulberry B and the Channel ports.

Lieutenant Colonel

Sister in Charge QAIMNS
5 X sister QAIMNS

The duty of batman will be carried out by ships personnel. (As was cooking etc)

When operating in a special role (on a hospital ship with operating theatre) the following additions were made
2 X specialist or graded surgeon and specialist or graded anaesthetist
2 X corporal nursing orderly
15 X nursing orderly
operating room assistant
theatre assistant QAIMNS

This was not usual in NW Europe since the sea crossing was short and emergency cases were evacuated by air.

I know this is an old thread, but thought I would add some clarification ot the QA in the picture. She is a Reserve Nurse as indicated by her tippet. I do not see the "T" in the corners which would indicate she was a TAN.

I would be guessing if I said QA Reserves were also all officers as I don't know that for sure.
