Nice photo, put in hours of research to find out more about the addressee's family and Jim's service? Possible to link the location of the photo to any particular battalion at the time? The bass drum, would that be a general design for the regiment on it or unique to a Battalion?

the site of the camp was in Wales and the welsh regiment were known to practice there during the great war.
https://www.peoplescollection.wales/items/1684146 it is located in south Pembrokeshire to the north of Milford haven and is recorded as being used by the 1st Bn welsh regiment "Hearson Camp To the south of Hill Mountain Hearson Camp was established in 1914 for 1st Battalion, the Welsh Regiment's training.[5] The area was later returned to farmland. A scoping study of the site was carried out in 2014 by Dyfed Archaeological Trust to determine whether there was a case for archaeological study of this and other wartime sites in the county. The paper includes a contemporary War Office map of the village and sketch of the camp.[4]" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hill_Mountain another paper stated that the 9th RWF also used the site and it seems as well as other welsh BN's I found two Jim Waite's, William J Waite and Ivor J Waite who are both early war for the welsh regiment as they got 15 stars. Ivor J Waite 19th Battalion Welsh Regiment 34648 William J Waite Welsh Regiment 26803

Interesting stuff, the 19th Bn weren't raised until 1915, the card is dated 1914, does that discount Ivor Waite or is the info on him not that conclusive?

Quote:
I don't know about the drums, how much alike were the drums for the different bn's, I will look at any pictures I have or have copied for ref purposes. I only have the free ancestry which gives me MIC's though a few times a year they allow full access. that would allow medal rolls as well which should have his bn on them from his army number 26803

w j waites MIc says he landed in December 1915 which was when the 10th, 13th, 14th 15th & 16th welsh landed at le havre, though these are all new battalions, maybe he was transferred to bolster a new battalion.
