Hello Griff,
Oh dear, well never mind you can't win every match, sounds like both he and the team gave it their very best today though!
Regards Frank

They gave it a good go against strong opposition.

The "Gun-metal" is in fact a bronze colour (LB&BCo)..... and there is a blackened version as well (by Gaunt). The black is white metal base (Gaunt) with the colours applied with longer sliders than normal.... identical to the chrome Motto we see from Gaunt (with long and short sliders).

There is also a blackened AA by Gaunt (with a long slider and a proper black AA finish) ...see below; also the blackened (Gaunt) white metal long & short slider; also the LB&BCo Bronze (or "Gun Metal")

* I should have the "TKS" bronze version any day now Is it just going to be the LB&BC bronze seen below or will it be marked "TKS"?
Griff

The blackened white metal Motto was used by regimental officers whist on attachment in Oman in the 1980's and came to me via an old friend in Melbourne who was a relentless lancer collector and he got it direct fron the regiment. His collection was sold a few years ago through Bosleys and he got several thousand pounds for it. I missed out on the lot.

Cheers

Phil.

Phil

Thanks for that, I was lucky enough to find a 1980s short slider Wm based blackened version that looks a bit "sand blasted"

Default QRL / 17th/21st Lancer - Motto

As an ex lancer I've never heard of or seen a gilded motto. During my service I wore a white metal [also chrome & staybrite] Motto and a blackened Motto in northern Ireland. After my service the regiment did wear a bronzed motto with combat dress. Officers' hat & beret mottos were similar but of a smaller size.

17/21L Officer collar dogs mottos were brass / gilded but quite small.

Hi

By "Gilded" you mean brass or gilt metal I have some genuine examples of modern brass Mottoes (or yellow metal at least) that are made by Gaunt and LB&BCo..... but I believe these to be made for the Museum shops rather than the Regiment?

Its good to hear that the chrome mottoes (Gaunt) were worn as well

I would like to see the QRL c2000 "private purchases" you elude to?

Griff

Please find attached images of QRL 'private purchases' these are not in great condition and show considerable wear. I have tried to obtain a firmer date but the chaps can't recall, so circa 2000 will have to do.

Griff

I agree LB&BCo, that was the conclusion I had reached, both these private purchases closely match the AA marked motto's of theirs that I have.

If they are post 1980 then they might be 17/21L or QRL ? as the previous owners served in both.

That's a little disappointing, but interesting

I have the Motto (couple or three times)..... the FFSCap is the ORs shape according to the photos, I would also expect to see the Tailors stamp in it. I have a feeling that if you look at the holes for the Motto loops they will be freshly cut? If the Motto was truely ERVII then I would expect to see "hobbed" lettering in the rear and "D" loops, I suspect it will have the "O" loops for the modern Beret.
