Yes that’s right. Definitely not a 1916 all GM issue as I said in my OP since 1. it’s not on the official list from Julian’s research and 2. the person(s) who made it ended up doing twice as much brazing than they would have to on a standard BM badge.
I’m very much going with the unknown option as I’m 100% sure it’s genuine. Cadets/O.T.C. is something I hadn’t thought of but no reason at all it can’t be in contention, thanks!
