Morning Ivan,

If it is Australian it would be 7th Aust Machine Gun Battalion, and worn with the point downwards. The patch was approved in May 1943 but the battalion was raised in New Guinea in late 1942 and I doubt the patch was worn for long, probably after the battalion returned to Australia in 1943 or early 1944 - it was disbanded in March 1944.

It was not general practice for colour patches to be worn on shirts, which is the only possible reason for the attachment to the khaki backing with clasp. The patch also looks completely unworn and unused (although of correct period manufacture), not something I would expect if it had been specifically made up for wear in the field.
