Hi Dave,

Which mail account was compromised?
Was it the mail account supplied by your ISP provider?
Was it a free yahoo mail account?

Did you conquer it back from the scammers by accessing it and changing your password?
Or did you give up on it?

Were the deleted folders in your mail account or on your private computer?

If it was a yahoo account and if you had a backup "controlling or notification" mail adress (of course with a different password) then you can get control back by stating on your login screen: "cannot access" - then it will send a link to your other address. You can use it to change your password.

There are more options I know to get access to a mailbox.
- Find a nice program on the web. It asks you for your e-mail address and its password. Many people enter both and their friends get a nice invitation to do the same.
- have a poor antivirus program and they get into your computer
- have a poor password like "Dave123" and have it hacked.
etc.
