Default Royal Artillery & a collection of South Africa badges

My gt grandfather James Armstrong born Ireland 1838 served as a gunner in the Royal Artillery, I have his badge, & then as an ast commisaire & commisaire in Transport & Mess, in Southwark at 1881 census. I have a photo, taken some time around or after his marriage in 1874, of him wearing a campaign medal, thought to be South Africa Anglo Zulu War. I also have these cap badges thought to have belonged to James - perhaps swapped with comrades: Scottish Horse cap badge (formed in S. Africa 1900), blue springbok lapel badge possibly Cape Town Highlanders, Queens Own Cameron Highlanders Association badge, Royal Army Pay Corps cap or collar dog, Civil Service Association star badge.

Can anyone put together a picture of how or where James could have got these other badges?

It is thought that he was based briefly in Fermoy 1878, & also may have been in Plymouth 1860-61 (muster rolls), both with Transport & Mess.

Thanks for looking :-D
