Nothing official Bill other than I,ve had a few Battledress to the unit and all of them including the one I still have(see above photo) have all had the black wool backing when a canvas title was used. Seems like a popular if not official practice with this unit. The English made version that James has shown here also shows up frequently on Hussars BD's including examples at Both the Elgin and former 1st Hussar's museums...
The black wool backing was also known to be used by soldiers of 1CACR with two BD'S observed by myself with wool backed titles and having had the titles like that as well..
I,ve asked 1st Hussars vets that live around here what they remember about such details, but to a man none could really recall any insignia trivialities that badge nerds such as us would find interesting.....One guy told me...Hey I just drove the bus....
