In accordance with British tradition, Canada didn't use the letter I to identify sub-units. The junior firing battery in 3 RCHA was J Battery. There was no I Battery in the RCHA.
The Americans do it differently. They use I but don't use J when lettering companies and troops in regiments.
All this because in the 18th and 19th centuries, the written capital I and J letters were identical.
And I agree about the chroming. A very common practice for regimental belt buckles and plates.
