I know William was a career military man, the 1901 census finds him at Regents Park Barracks, a Trooper, so if i am correct in identifying him as being the ancestor in the photo, then after some years at that rank he managed to gain the rank of Sergeant (?) during the war - no wonder he looks so proud.

It's hard to spot, but the reference to clasp is there - "1914 cl & roses......."
