The first cloth badge appeared on ATS uniform in November 1939 after the Lord Mayor of London requested that ATS City of London companies ‘should be given the honour and privilege of wearing the insignia of the City’ on both jacket sleeves. It was not officially recorded until published in Army Council Instruction of 21st January 1942.
