One of the problems with badges, is that the average wearer never really looks closely at them, only those of us with an interest. I have met many ex-servicemen who could not describe the badge they wore in detail and had to drag it out to see what it looked like. A veteran who lost his badge would more than likely see a similar badge and swear it was the one he wore 20 years ago when a collector may know 100% that the particular badge wasn't in use at the time. The difference between a VB badge and a regular badge may have been lost on wartime servicemen who didn't know what the other badge looked like.
