I can confirm all of that description (including the quality issues and the partially indistinct maker's mark). I have one of the SUR badges with the copied Argyll and Sutherland background and the SUR (KC) insignia on top (all one piece and gravity cast). i've also seen one other example in another collection... so they are around.

Mine has the top point of the Argyll and Sutherland design cut out of it... so the badge must have been too tall to fit on some thing other than headdress (I presume)... perhaps on a cross belt>
