It's one of those words I like, so I tend to use it far too much, I think the photograph is superb, but, I do not think it unusual in any way, I cannot comment on what HK might or might not have believed, I only met him on a single occasion.
I much prefer to see the evidence, as you have clearly shown in this thread, thanks again for showing it on here.

My recollection is that Kipling and King state that the collar badge was worn in the SD cap.
I am not in a position to check K&K at the moment.
If I am wrong, then dreadfully sorry, but if there is plenty of evidence that the full size cap badge was worn in the SD cap, albeit that what officers wore may not reflect what ORs wore then it would be helpful if that information was divulged without having to dance around to-ing and fro-ing between posts.
