The catalyst was the Military Service Act of 1916 that introduced conscription, whereby all men between certain ages were registered and then called up in their demographic group, and then largely sent to whatever part of the army that they were needed unless they had a special skill or family tie that directed them to a unit. This significant change effectively rendered differences between regular, Territorial and Service battalions as meaningless and reinforcements were merely sent by infantry base Depots to where they were needed. In those circumstances differences between badges no longer made any sense at all and so were discontinued as mentioned.
