The Lion atop the Crown is interesting.

The Victorian General Service button standardised in 1872 didn't have the top Lion.

With the death of Queen Victoria and the change to the "Kings" Crown the uses of the design hadn't changed so why was a Lion added?

But I have a few Medium Victorian Officers Quality buttons with the lion, maybe they had some other Royal purpose?

And there are other ranks WM KC buttons of all sizes with the crossed swords back mark without the Lion, maybe they date from 1902 before the design change?
