No 4 is not what you think. This badge was introduced in 1918 as an economy version of the Officers cap badge. It was worn by an officer who wanted it to look more like the standard badge, hence the backing. I have seen pics of it being worn by junior Officers.
At that time Warrant Officers wore an Officers cap badge as well. It was only later (1920ish) that it became the WO badge only. In my collection I have one with a full embroidered crown and the bottom of the metal version, all mounted on black cloth with padding.
