I have a friend that was in the RN during WW 2 and he has a mine clearance badge but the difference with his is the fact that it has tiny holes on the outside of the badge where it is actually sewn on the uniform not attached by a pin or lugs like these ones.

Are you perhaps meaning the Royal Naval Patrol service badge worn on the lower part of the left sleeve? This is a much smaller badge.
