It has recently got a lot more complicated with the new options on what constitutes a letter or parcel, and is more expensive compared to previous tariff options. To build on Luke & Mick's comments:

Tracking (as a parcel) starts at $25.

Registered letter starts from $17.70 but is supposed to only be used for documents!

Standard airmail letter is from $3.20 depending on weight but has no tracking, though you can pay extra to insure.

Then with the revised rules at the other end there's the possibility of HMRC applying VAT on arrival, depending on value.

Whether any of these is good value I will leave to individuals. From my perspective, unless you're sending cloth items or a bulk lot it is hard going to do it in a cost effective way!
