Hi Shahl
Tylden's book is quite helpful with this ,
"..From 1889 to 1895 the badge was an eight-pointed star with a bugle horn in the centre and a crown above surrounded by the title in a scroll; until 1903 it consisted of crossed rifles on a maltese cross with the motto "Defence not Defiance" and until 1913 of the Natal coat of arms on a Maltese Cross , with a collar badge of the British Coat of Arms over the Natal arms and the name on the scroll "

Your badge is the crossed rifles rather than the Natal COA . The lugs are east/west , so conventional badge wisdom would indicate that it is a cap badge , but who really knows ? It could be a collar but i suspect that the other badge that you have shown is the collar worn with this badge as the cap.
So I would like it for a cap badge worn for a few years after the ABW.
I have a similar badge, which is probably the one you saw on BoB a while back.
Keep well
Mike
