What puzzles me is that the IWM link states that they "were worn by both male and female military personnel " and there is also a "SKIRTS, HOSPITAL, A.T.S." but why ?

Why just for A.T.S. ? Were there no other "female military personnel" in the hospitals "recovering from wounds or illnesses" ?

Also , as these 'uniforms' were introduced in 1944/1945 would there really have been sufficient numbers of A.T.S. patients/wounded in hospitals to justify the design/manufacture/cost of a new uniform specifically for them ?
