Metal guns were not worn officially - the yellow cloth guns were the authorised badge of the Aust MGC and were sometimes not worn, especially when the MG battalion patches were introduced.
It is possible metal guns might have been worn by individuals on best service dress on leave and I have a photo where small metal crossed MGs appear to have been worn on the shoulder straps.
