It is perhaps not the best example, but, I think from the photographs, it is still quite a pleasing one.

I can't see that they'd be holes for stitching.
Flaws in the die or mould, general wear on what appears to be a well rubbed badge?
Edit: now I've had another look they appear to be a couple of "dings".
