As I am creeping into the more expensive zone with my East Surrey collection I have to admit that I become more cautious, a dodgy KC 1902-1959 pattern for a tenner max is not a big hit but £70+ for a VB is if it is not 'good'. I like to get around the fairs occasionally to handle the upper end stuff to 'get the feel'.
