Ok chaps. I found that I do indeed have an example of Marks odd variant. It is the example rejected by the Regiment as being substandard- the central device was fixed off set at an angle to the right and the flames were not symetrical and are distinctive by the single 'drooping' flame on the right side of the badge as you look at it. Indeed it does not have a loop for a hackle. Tim is correct that these 'returns' ended up being modified with a central device for 'Soldier, Soldier' ' the King's Fusiliers. The central device was later used on a variation, fixed onto the backing grenade of the generic RRF badge in brass not anodised.
There are quite a few makers variations of the RWF, including slidered examples and an odd plastic badge, with a slider, similar to the black RRF type used in N.I.
Regards all
Bess
