I think it depends what you’re trying to represent.
If it’s someone who marched off to war 1914 to mid 1916 they would have been wearing the standard RA badge with a short slider fixing.
As mentioned 1916 saw the introduction of the unpierced economy issue and 1917 the strengthen scroll type.
Not intending to sow confusion but perhaps worth a mention I own an example (and have seen others) which is unpierced and with the 1917 strengthening wire.
So ultimately you have a broad church of what you can choose to represent the RA during the 1914-18 period.
