They were worn as an arm badge (forearm) by some police forces in white metal and chrome. I last saw one being worn by a Cheshire police sgt. in 1974. In his case it was positioned above his chevrons on one arm only. I'm not quite sure why you believe they were worn as a cap badge by female ambulance drivers (presumably St. John). They did in fact have a specifically designed badge for wear on caps. As far as I'm aware they were intended for wear on the arm by qualified police first aiders, and perhaps others.
