A badge with a similar underlying metal just went through eBay, pic attached. This one shows evidence of a gilt coating but is in rough shape. I wonder if yours was professionally "cleaned up" at some point? A proud owner may have thought the badge looked unpresentable in a condition similar to the pic below...?
