I have often wondered about this. Even when I was a kid in 1960s Saskatchewan, Ukrainian-Canadians faced a lot of smug prejudicial attitudes and 'jokes'. Their acceptance into military circles was probably extremely limited prior to the FWW (and of course, many were interned as 'Enemy Aliens').
The device on the 24th badge certainly bears strong resemblance to the trident; and that is a very unusual lion for a British Empire (Commonwealth) badge.
