I managed to speak to my grandad.. it took a while, he's 88 now and talks forever !
The younger man in both pictures is Frank Ketley, he was just a family friend. He doesn't know about his history but remembers him coming round the house on a horse !!
The older man IS his grandfather, Arthur Heffernon ( born 1855 ) .
He knew he was an artillery man but didn't know anything about the medal ribbon.. Any ideas ?
The census records have him thus:
aged 29 as a bombardier
aged 36 as a Corporal
but then
aged 46 he is listed as a "fitters labourer".. so his military career was finished
I'm going to do some searches and see what conflicts his career could have covered..
