One thing, you were correct it is a silver war badge (SWB) not a wound badge as Andy commented, they were given for a number of different reasons and most were not to do with wounds.

to the right of the two meadls mentioned and which Andy said were awarded for his service with the MGC as a LT (shown by the X next to the medals and his rank/unit. The bracket show they were issued together, the IV is for issue voucher which shows he signed for them by return of such, the WD is for war department clerk and the date and NW is uncertainly thought to be for New armies.

You can get his SWB roll from ancestry and that will give you an annotation for why he was discharged mid war.
Yes i keep calling it the wound badge, when indeed it is the war badge. As in Silver War Badge.
