Looking at the tip pattern of the laurels where the badge has been 'decapitated' there are two laurels rather than a single sharp point. Others will know better than me if this gives a clue to the original configuration - from what I can see in John Rawlinson's book - page 80 - RMA OR would have single laurel tip, unsure of variants though. Royal Marines Other Ranks KC - 1923-1953 - page 85 generally shows two laurels at tip. Royal Naval School of Music appears a bit mixed.
