Thanks for confirming it is Wingate in the photograph, it is an unusual angle and he seems more clean shaven than he appears in other photographs taken in 1943/44. That said, he was probably the only British officer in India still wearing a pith helmet in 1944.
I would hazard a guess that the camouflaged slouch hats were introduced specifically for Operation Thursday.
