For what it's worth, I can confirm the 2 different patterns of caps worn during my RAF service (1968-78).
The earlier pattern (stiff, wired) had black plastic strap and brass buckles, painted black.
The later pattern (soft, officer's type, no wire), had black plastic strap and ferrous metal buckles, painted black.
I need to hunt out the Station Order informing re the change.
