Maybe someone with a more precise knowledge of the English language than mine might be able to confirm this point of view?

Hi Fougasse1940,

Sorry to take so long in getting back. Not too keen on embellishment as looking it up it refers to an ornament or decoration or another definition being a fictitious addition.

I think item works OK as a badge as such does refer to an integral part of head dress if not uniform.

After researching a little around the anodising process on the weekend I do have to change to definition to be:

An item of head dress used by various organisational units of the British Army composed of anodised aluminium, initially colour dyed by the anodising process and susequently (as required) by electroplating. Manufactured by various companies between <start date> and <end date>.

I need the dates Guys, the dates...

Regards

Chris
