From The Formation Sign January and April 2009.

Almeric Paget, grandson of the Marquess of Anglesey who led the Heavy Brigade at Waterloo, founded his Massage Corps in August 1914 to supply 50 trained masseuses in military hospitals for remedial work with the wounded. The corps received War Office recognition in early 1915 and the word ‘Military’ was added to the title in December 1916. From early 1917 members of the corps could serve overseas. In January 1919 it became the Military Massage Service.

Some 3000 APMC/APMMC served during the Great War, nearly all in the UK. In 1917 when new guidelines for some treatments allowed soldiers to be treated abroad rather than brought home, there was a need for massage staff to serve abroad, the men being badged RAMC. In all 42 women served abroad in France and Italy, one – Mrs Catherine Pollock – being decorated with an MBE for service with 8 Stationary Hospital in France’.

The armband worn is shown.
