This photo has written on the back, 'Sanford of the 10th Batt. "A" Coy. Please keep for me.' While I can't find a 'Sanford', there were three Sandfords in the 10th. This is almost certainly 738 Pte Albert William Sandford, a 1914 enlistment who served on Gallipoli and was killed in action with A Coy at Pozieres on 25 July 1916 -- one of the unit's many casualties at that terrible battle. There's no indication where this photo was taken but it was probably in Egypt. He's wearing one of the 1st Division's early style long narrow patches, purple over sky blue for the 10th.
