Just re-read the post about "G. Cheyne". Again, I wouldn't think that this is an especially common surname ( at least not "W. Smith"...) so go to TROVE of NAA and see what turns up. George (?????) CHEYNE may have tried to enlist but was rejected so there could be a file for him at NAA.
