Were there any other TF awards for service that I don't know about? He was an accomplished marksman. Could that lead to a gong?

In post 26 you say he was commissioned in March 1915 and posted to France in October 1916 so, if the photo was taken during or after service in France, then it could well be the ribbon of the MC.
