This patch is printed on Satin Drill cotton fine weave which was introduced a bit later than the coarse wave, sometime in 1943. It is said that the satin cotton had a tendency of fading to a redder colour. This one had the exact same outcome.

to my peepers the bright red patch appears to be the normal drill pattern. herewith a brushed cotton example. specsavers anyone ?
