I presume the badge mentioned in the first post is the 8-pointed star, QVC in centre, LOCAL COMPANIES on circlet.
This badge was worn by the Royal New Zealand Fencible Corps, formed in 1847 from military pensioners who had formerly served in the British Army. At their peak they numbered 721 men. Corps was disbanded in 1858.
