The Kingdom of Yugoslavia was formed in 1918 after the end of World War I, and was first called the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Its coat of arms incorporated symbols related to the Serbian, Croat, and Slovene nations: the upper left section of the shield displays a Serbian cross, the upper right has the checkerboard from the Croatian coat of arms, and the bottom section has the three stars from the Slovenian coat of arms.

The official name of the state was changed to "Kingdom of Yugoslavia" by King Alexander I on 3 October 1929.
