The badge is an intertwined V and W. The letters stand for "Voluntary Worker". The badge is WW1 period and was awarded to both men and women (most people believe it to be a badge only awarded to women). The badge was awarded by the Director General of Voluntary Work (DGVW) and was awarded to anyone who contributed a minimum of 30 hours recognized voluntary work towards the war effort.
Members of the St John Ambulance, British Red Cross and Princess Mary's Needlework Guild could not be awarded the badge as their organizations already had their own award systems.
