1st Regt. Otago M.R. Cap badge clarification

In revamping my New Zealand display this badge is a mystery to me. I have been unable to find it in any of my searches.
It has ‘D’ shaped lugs like those associated with Gault (I believe).
Could you tell me when it was worn?
